Smithers District Chamber of Commerce

New Members Elected to Smithers District Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

March 16, 2018

The Smithers District Chamber of Commerce elected its new Board of Directors Thursday, March 15 at the annual AGM. Elected as President, for a two year term, is Greg Wacholtz from Bulkley Valley Credit Union and elected as Vice-President is Elizabeth Miller from Seabridge Gold. Both have been on the board for several years, Greg as Vice President and Elizabeth as one of the directors. Re-elected for another two year term is Chris Mitchell from Smithers Lumber Yard. New to the board, for two year terms, are Shauna Peterson from Investors Group and JC Brown from SMP RV Smithers.

Retiring President Colin Bateman spoke about his time on the board highlighting events like being lifted up in a bucket truck at a Chamber appreciation barbecue and not being let down until we got two new members. Thankfully it happened in the half hour and he got an amazing selfie out of the stunt. Heather Gallagher, Chamber Manager, presented Colin with an Alpenman statue and thanked him for all his work with the Chamber. The other members of the board are Treasurer Bruce Hutchinson from Applied Fire Solutions and Directors Baron Carter from Carters Jewelers, George Whitehead from Scotiabank, Brian Atherton who is an individual member.

I think the future of Smithers’ business community is bright. There’s a new generation of people starting out and taking over old businesses in the community, supplying new ideas and breathing life into this town. The people here are friendly and support each other, but I think that the best thing about our town is the diversity of people here.
