Great things have been happening at Smithers Saltos Gymnastics Club! This non profit organization, run under the direction of the Bulkley Valley Gymnastics Association,(BVGA) provides safe, affordable and high-quality recreational activities and competitive gymnastics programming to children, youth and adults. The programming offered by the Smithers Saltos Gymnastics Club (The Club) accommodates a wide-range of skills, abilities and backgrounds and is provided at not-for-profit rates to people in our community and across the region. This high volume multi-use facility offers pre-competitive, competitive and recreational gymnastics programming, recreational parkour programming, programs for daycares and school group, integrative programming for developmentally challenged youth, programs specific to adults, seniors and parent & toddlers. Most recently, The Club has added a fitness studio to offering pilates and spin classes to the public. The Club also provides cross-training programs for community sports clubs, and most recently, acts as a training venue for the Canada Sports School, in partnership with School District 54 and Engage Sport North. In a community with such a long winter season, an indoor fitness facility is critical in facilitating programs that promote fitness for life. The Club and its volunteer board of directors, values and promotes growth mindset, motor development, and healthy active lifestyles for all ages. Gymnastics provides a great foundation for fundamental motor development, and allows youth to transition into any sport. The programming provided by The Club provides fun and exciting ways to stay healthy, get exercise and gain valuable life skills like teamwork, goal setting, dedication and hard work. The Club values its youth employees and has a staff existing of 11 Coaches in Training, 8 NCCP certified coaches and 1 head coach. The Club recognizes the value community centres have in bringing the community together, and as such The Club has secured a 15-year lease with the Town of Smithers, and is planning a building expansion project to accommodate the growing recreational and gymnastics needs of this community and region.

I think the future of Smithers’ business community is bright. There’s a new generation of people starting out and taking over old businesses in the community, supplying new ideas and breathing life into this town. The people here are friendly and support each other, but I think that the best thing about our town is the diversity of people here.
